Steely Pan! Please Help Me!

Hi Steely Pan!

My name is Maxwell Moulson and I am reaching out to you because I desperately need your help.

Here is my story: I am half Trinidadian and I would like to give back to Trinidad and Tobago by promoting tourism there.

The division of tourism in Tobago set up a competition to find The Island Connoisseur! A Canadian who would travel to Tobago and spend the summer months doing all the fantastic things the island has to offer while sharing their adventures through social media. To enter the contest applicants had to create a 30 second video and write a bio about themselves explaining why they are the best person for the job. There were over two hundred applicants and the judges chose me as one of ten finalists. Now it is up to the world to vote among us to decide who will be the Tobago Island Connoisseur.

I am the youngest finalist at 20 years old. I am currently in college and am working. Something like this, for someone my age, at this point in my life, would be a life-changing experience. I couldn’t possibly imagine a better way to spend the summer and I wouldn’t want to spend it any other way. I am upbeat, enthusiastic, and eager and would be perfect for this.

I am requesting your assistance because while I am doing everything in my power to inform the world of my candidacy, some of the other finalists are light-years ahead. The winner is chosen strictly by the amount of votes they receive. If you could mention me in a tweet, I would appreciate the surge of votes that I’m certain I would get and desperately need! I unfortunately do not possess the following that the other finalists have, but I might be able to become the Island Connoisseur and personally share my experiences with you and your followers with your support.

If you found the time to read this long message I sincerely thank you.  The voting for this contest ends Friday May 16th at 9PM. The links to everything associated with this are below.

Thank you!

I NEED YOUR HELP! I'M RUNNING OUT OF TIME!

Hello Social Media Personnel,

My name is Maxwell Moulson and I am reaching out to you because I desperately need your help with the biggest, most important event in my life thus far (I am not exaggerating).

SHAY CARL! I NEED YOUR HELP! I'M RUNNING OUT OF TIME!

Hi Shay Carl!

My name is Maxwell Moulson and I am reaching out to you because I desperately need your help. I watched your episode of ShayTards today where you spoke about helping Tyler out and it was inspiring and touching; you should be so proud of yourself! And I feel so awful about what happened to Tyler's girlfriend's father... :(

My request doesn’t involve business, but it does involve the biggest, most important event in my life thus far (I am not exaggerating).

Here is my story: I am half Trinidadian and I would like to give back to Trinidad and Tobago by promoting tourism there. I am aware that after high school you spent some time in Trinidad as part of your LDS mission and that is absolutely fantastic!

The division of tourism in Tobago set up a competition to find The Island Connoisseur! #60days A Week In Sint Maarten

My family and I have been in Sint Maarten for five days now and I have to say that I am loving it! The weather is perfect! It has been a solid 27 degrees and sunny every single day and that's the forecast for our remaining three days. I have woken up at 6:30am each day but it's not a bad thing; I just naturally wake up with the sun; I feel like that's the way it's supposed to be.

Some people may be wondering why I spelled it Sint Maarten instead of St. Martin. Well either one is correct. That is because the island is actually divided in half: the French side and the Dutch side. We are staying on the Dutch side.

The locals are very friendly and helpful, always smiling and laughing; they sure now how to keep the party going!

Yesterday, April 30th, was day one of their Grand Carnival Parade and it was tons of fun! The costumes, the music, the energy, the only thing I was sad about was that it only lasted about three hours! My Dad and I stopped a few of the players and took some photos with them. We learned that the winning "band" gets $10,000 USD. To my knowledge the band does not simply include the musicians but also all the people dressed up in costumes and dancing. The photo below only represents one of the many bands that were involved in this parade. Every 30 or so car lengths, a different band dressed in completely different costumes would come through followed by or preceded by a bus with musicians playing live music.

Ladies man? Hahahahahahaha. I stopped a couple of the carnival players to pose in a photo with me! :)

We are staying at the Royal Islander Hotel on Maho Beach; it's very pretty. The constant planes are a little distracting, however we've gotten used to it. Because the beach is so close to the runway, people like to stand up to the fence when a big jet is about to take off, and the force from the engine actually blows people off their feet and into the water. It's pretty funny to watch but pretty dangerous.

On Tuesday we visited "Baie Nettlé" on the French side of the island; it was very peaceful. You couldn't hear the planes and there weren't many people there. The waves were much more calm than those at Maho Beach, and there was a huge dock to jump/ dive off of into the water. The restaurant at Baie Nettlé was called Dreams and was nice, but VERY expensive. On the French side the currency is Euros not American Dollars and so while prices seemed only a little higher than normal, once you saw the Euros symbol after it, a little higher became A LOT higher (we spent $180 USD on lunch). Overall the experience was enjoyable. I'd definitely go back (if I had the money).

Baie Nettlé at Sunset. About to jump off the dock!

Today (Thursday) we will be going to Orient Bay, aka the Nude Beach. Yeah... a nude beach with my parents... that's what I where I want to go... they better keep their clothes on! Haha wish me luck!

On Friday we've booked a trip to Saint Barthélemy or St. Bart's for short. It's an island even smaller than Sint Maarten, only 21 square kilometres. It's the island where all the celebrities are said to visit. Hopefully I see someone famous! Haha.

I will let you know how today and tomorrow go! Thanks for reading! Don't forget to vote for me (Maxwell Moulson) as the Island Connoisseur at http://vote.60daysinparadise.com ! :)

#60Days Tobago Island Connoisseur: Maxwell Moulson's Bio

What this is about:

This summer I am hoping to spend 60 days in Caribbean paradise on the beautiful island of Tobago. I have put my name into the hat for the chance to become the Island Connoisseur and to make my dream into a reality.

The job of the Island Connoisseur involves some pretty cool responsibilities. I would live on Tobago for two months while exploring everything the island has to offer. From cliff jumping, snorkelling, fishing, and paddle boarding, to golfing, tennis, and taking in the night life, it would be my task and pleasure to share these and many more activities on my social media channels, thereby spreading the word about this dream destination.

The first requirement of this competition was to create a 30 second video making an initial claim as to why I am the best candidate for the job. Check it out below!

Myself (back), my brother (left),
and my father (right): Christmas
afternoon in Hawaii 2002.
The travel bug bit my family when I was very young and it was the best thing that could have ever happened to us. My name is Maxwell Moulson and I have traveled from my hometown of Mississauga, Ontario to beautiful hot and cold destinations all over the world.

I am a former film and television production student which, as one could probably guess, means I always have some sort of camera on my person. I love sharing my experiences with the online world (as well as by word of mouth) and my Instagram account can vouch for me. My ever-growing following of over 3000 people give me positive feedback by liking and commenting on my photos and videos everyday.

I take pride in my ability to capture that “in the moment” moment. Many people are accused of trying so hard to capture a moment in a photograph or on video that they lose out on the experience all together; but I believe I have it down to a science. You can always count on me to be in the right place at the right time to snap that perfect picture and still describe to you how great it felt to be in that moment afterwards.

Let’s get (more) personal:

I am a Goju-Ryu Karate black belt and have been studying martial arts since I was eight years old; it is my most defining characteristic. I’ve pushed my body to its limits, and I know physical pain. I’ve shed blood, sweat and tears and I know what its like to want to quit… but I would never dare do such a thing.

Left: Posing in my living room before heading out to a tournament! Anyone thinking Karate Model? haha!
Right: Filming some board breaking in the park for a video assignment!

I am an amateur musician, who throughout my high school career was the closing act for each and every talent show. I am by no means a great singer but the passion, enthusiasm, and vigour that I brought to the stage turned my thrilling experience into the audience’s enjoyment.

Last but certainly not least I am a amateur photographer and videographer. Say Cheese! And read above if you’ve forgotten that I am the in-the-moment aficionado! (I also shoot sketches and short films, act, write, and edit! I seriously love editing both photos and videos.) (See my Instagram page.)

By the way… Have I mentioned I love to eat?! Wow I haven’t? Well I do! I am like one of those thin guys you see in cartoons that can eat a surprising amount. Remember Shaggy and Scooby Doo? Yeah, that’s basically me. Speaking of which, does anyone have a Scooby Snack?

Me playing on a beach in Tobago, Age 4.
Ha, ha! Now time for some emotion:

The last time I was in Tobago I was four years old. The beauty of the island, the abundance of activities, the culture? I can’t say that I remember… What I can say is that I am excited. What I can say is that I am thrilled. For even the opportunity to be considered as the Island Connoisseur has got my heart pumping. The possibly of a dream job that would take me back to my first real vacation spot has lit a fire in my stomach and put a gleam in my eye.

The Island Connoisseur
“My heart, my passion, my desire, my soul,
Me, summer 2013
All of me, and everything I know;
Was abandoned, left, forgotten and forsaken,
Left to die, out in the Caribbean.

Lips on lips, I expel my breath,
Into his lungs, then pound on his chest;
My identity, wake up! You’ve been given a second chance!
Resuscitated! Revived! Now the world is in our hands!

Let’s venture out together, let’s regain what we’ve lost!
The missing piece of our puzzle, the cherry on top!
Let’s return to the one place, that our heart knows for sure,
TOBAGO! And our new name? Is the Island Connoisseur.”
